Microsoft 365 Copilot은 Microsoft가 최근 발표한 서비스로, 인공지능이 기존 자료를 분석하여 발표 자료를 만들어주고 엑셀 스프레드시트에서 데이터를 분석해주는 일이 가능합니다.

이 서비스는 GPT-4와 같은 생성 AI(인공지능)를 탑재하여 초안 작성부터 기존 자료 분석·발표 자료 생성·일정 관리 등 인간이 할 수 있는 대부분의 업무를 대신해줍니다.

그는 이 자리에서

키보드와 마우스 없이 컴퓨터를 못 사용하는 것처럼, 앞으로는 copilot 같은 (초거대 AI) 자연어 모델 없이는 컴퓨터를 사용하지 못하게 될 것"

이라며

"이는 일하는 방식을 근본적으로 바꾸고 생산성의 새 물결을 열어줄 것"

이라고 말했습니다.

Copilot은 '부기장'이라는 뜻으로 인간 기장옆에서 업무를 돕습니다.

특히 오픈AI의 새 자연어 모델인 GPT-4가 탑재돼 진짜 부기장과 함께 일하는 것처럼 대화로 업무 지시를 할 수 있습니다.

코파일럿은 △워드 △엑셀 △파워포인트 △아웃룩(이메일) △팀즈(협업툴) 등 MS 365에 내장됩니다.

해당 앱을 사용하는 동안 코파일럿 채팅창을 띄워 프롬프트(명령어)를 입력하면 원하는 작업을 할 수 있습니다.

워드에 작성된 문서 내용을 작성·요약·편집해 줄 뿐만 아니라 이를 바탕으로 PPT 발표 슬라이드로 전환해줍니다.

사용자가 원하는 테마를 고르면 코파일럿은 이에 맞게 디자인해 주기도 합니다.

엑셀 내 데이터를 분석하거나 사용하기 편하게 재편집해줄 수 있고, 그래프 등 시각화 작업도 클릭이 아닌, 명령어 입력 방식으로 진행할 수 있습니다.

MS 팀즈에 적용된 Copilot

특히 MS의 화상회의 시스템 팀즈와 결합된 'Business chat'은 MS 365 앱과 일정·회의록·팀즈 내 대화 내용 등 사용자 데이터와 결합해 진짜 비서처럼 사용자를 돕습니다.

예를 들어 "제품 전략 업데이트를 팀에 공유해주세요"라고 프롬프트를 입력하면 오전에 있었던 회의를 바탕으로 Copilot 이 제품전략에 대해 요약하고 이메일과 팀즈 채팅 목록 등을 바탕으로 필요한 사람들에게 관련 내용을 공유합니다.

MS 365 Copilot은 현재 몇몇 제한된 기업 고객을 대상으로 기능을 테스트 중입니다.

MS는 "몇 달 안에 Copilot 은 모든 생산성 앱에 도입할 예정이다"며 "조만간 가격 책정 및 라이선스에 대해 더 자세히 알려드리겠다"고 했습니다.

Copilot은 GPT-4를 기반으로 하고 있어 할루시네이션 (환각)등 GPT-4가 가진 한계를 그대로 갖고 있습니다.

MS도 이날 발표에서 "Copilot이 옳을 때도 있고, 때로는 틀릴 때도 있다"고 인정했습니다.

한편, 더인포메이션, 테크크런치 등 외신은 MS가 Copilot을 아주 빠르게 확장하기는 힘들 것이라고 내다봤습니다.

GPT-4와 같은 초거대 AI를 많은 서비스에 적용하면서 지나치게 많은 GPU를 소비하게 된 것입니다.

더 인포메이션은 "MS는 AI를 실행하는데 필요한 서버 하드웨어, 즉 GPU의 내부 부족에 직면해있다"고 보도했습니다.

이에 오픈AI 측은 MS와 협력해 클라우드 MS 애저에 슈퍼컴퓨터를 구축했다고 밝혔습니다.

마이크로소프트는 Copilot을 자사 생산성 도구에 결합하겠다고 16일 밝혔다.

여기서 말하는 Copilot은 대형언어모델기반의 처리 및 조정엔진이다.

Copilot은 ‘부조종사’라는 의미를 가지는데, AI가 일종의 부조종사처럼 인간 옆에서 필요한 작업을 수행할 수 있게 보조하는 역할을 하겠다는 뜻을 담고 있다.

한편 Copilot이 활용하는 모델은 GPT-4만이 아니다.

MS가 자체적으로 만든 다른 언어 모델도 활용한다.

MS는 “가령 아웃룩에서 이메일 쓰레드를 요약할 때는 GPT-4가 활용되고, 그외 다른 제품에는 오픈 AI 및 MS가 만든 대형 모델을 종합적으로 활용했다”이라고 설명했다.

현재까지 MS가 개발한 모델 중에서는 언어 이해 용도로 활용되는 Turing, 번역이나 요약을 할 때 쓰는 Z-Code, 이미지 인식에 활용되는 Florenc 등의 모델이 있는데, 이중 어떤 제품에 어떤 모델이 들어갔는지는 밝히지 않은 상황이다.

MS는 보도자료를 통해 "365 Copilot은 매일 사용하는 앱에 통합돼 사용자가 작업 흐름을 유지할 수 있도록 도와주며, 중요한 작업에 더 집중할 수 있도록 한다”라고 설명했다.

아직 서비스가 공식 출시되진 않았지만 MS는 Copilot의 동작 양상을 일부 소개했다.

일단 워드(Copilot in Word)에서는 원하는 글의 방향을 명령어 창에 입력하면, Copilot이 알아서 글을 작성, 편집, 요약, 창작한다.

파워포인트(Copilot in PowerPoint)에서는 발표 내용 요약본을 전달하면 알아서 Copilot이 그에 맞는 프레젠테이션을 만들어준다.

엑셀(Copilot in Excel) 속 Copilot은 데이터에서 제공하는 의미 있는 영역이나 동향을 추출하고 적절한 시각화 자료도 만들어낸다.

복잡한 프로그래밍 코드를 입력해야 했던 수식 생성도 간편해진다.

일상적 언어로 질문하면 Copilot이 데이터의 상관관계를 밝히고, 가상 시나리오를 제안하고, 질문에 기반한 새로운 수식을 제안할 수 있다.

아웃룩(Copilot in Outlook)에서는 Copilot이 받은 편지함을 통합, 관리하거나 여러 번 주고받은 메일의 내용을 요약하거나 답장 초안을 제안한다.

물론 이런 기능의 완성도는 실제 서비스가 나와야 확인할 수 있을 것으로 보인다.

Copilot이 노코드 형태로 쉽게 코딩을 지원한다는 점을 고려하면, 이번 업데이트로 엑셀이나 파워포인트에서도 함수, 매크로와 유사한 고급 기능을 더 쉽게 사용할 수 있을 것이다.

엑셀에서 웹데이터를 크롤링해서 원하는 분석결과를 만드는 식이다.

엑셀을 많이 쓰는 재무나 유통업계 사용자에게 특히 더 유용할 수 있다.

이에 더해 엑셀에서 작업하던 내용을 알아서 아웃룩에 적용하는 식으로 여러 오피스 365 앱 사이에서 해야 했던 작업을 더 통합하기 쉬워질 수 있다”라고 분석했다.

실제로 MS는 오피스365 데이터를 통합 활용하는 사례를 공개했으며, 그 중심에는 ‘Business Chat’이라는 기능이 있다.

‘Business Chat’은 대형언어모델, MS 365 앱, 사용자 데이터(캘린더, 이메일, 채팅, 문서, 미팅, 연락처 등)를 결합해서 원하는 정보를 추출해줄 수 있다.

가령 사용자가 “제품 전략을 어떻게 업데이트했는지 팀에 알려줘”와 같은 문장을 명령어 입력창에 입력하면, ‘Business Chat’은 오전 회의, 이메일, 채팅 기록 등 사용자 데이터를 기반으로 업데이트 상황을 생성한다.

현재 ‘Business Chat’을 이용할 수 있는 서비스는 MS 365닷컴, 빙, 팀즈다.

MS CEO 사티아 나델라는 “이번에 공개한 업무용 Copilot은 사람들에게 더 큰 자율성을 부여하고, 가장 보편적 인터페이스인 자연어로 기술에 더 쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 한다”라고 말했다.

MS 부사장 재러드 스파타로는 “Copilot은 사람과 컴퓨터가 대화하는 모델이다.

Copilot은 맞는 말도 하지만 가끔식 틀리기도 한다.

그럼에도 Copilot이 완벽한 아이디어를 내놓지 못하더라도 실마리를 제공해 미리 유리하게 작업을 시작할 수 있을 것”이라고 평가했다.

MS 오피스 365는 Copilot으로 한층 경쟁력을 갖추겠지만 비영리 가치를 강조하며 설립된 오픈AI의 기술이 마이크로소프트 365라는 커머셜 제품에 우선 적용된 점에 대한 아쉬움의 목소리도 있다.

오픈AI의 목표는 범용 AI 기술을 만드는 것이었는데, 이들의 기술이 현재 MS 서비스에 주로 통합되는 것은 아쉬운 대목이다.

무료였던 챗GPT 또한 이제는 제대로 활용하기 위해 비용을 지불해야 하는 상황이다.

유료인 마이크로소프트 365에 챗GPT 기술이 우선 적용된 점은 AI기술의 비용 문턱이 높아질 것이라는 신호일 수 있다.

오픈AI가 초기에 추구했던 방향과는 다른 셈이다.

Microsoft 365 Copilot’s foundational skills are a game changer for productivity: It can already create, summarize, analyze, collaborate and automate using your specific business content and context. But it doesn’t stop there. Copilot knows how to command apps (e.g., “animate this slide”) and work across apps, translating a Word document into a PowerPoint presentation. And Copilot is designed to learn new skills. For example, with Viva Sales, Copilot can learn how to connect to CRM systems of record to pull customer data — like interaction and order histories — into communications. As Copilot learns about new domains and processes, it will be able to perform even more sophisticated tasks and queries.

Earlier this month we announced Dynamics 365 Copilot as the world’s first AI Copilot in both CRM and ERP to bring the next-generation AI to every line of business.
